For generation of Indians, movies have been a way to celebrate life. Right from the days of pre-colonial era, movies have entertained a vast number of Indians. Indian public have a certain affinity towards the movies as it allows them to feel the ambience of the make believe world. Not just limited to India, the movies are also in great demand among the neighboring countries and in various parts of the world, especially in countries where one can find sizeable Indian population.

Indians got the first taste of cinema on 7 July, 1896, when Lumiere brothers unveiled six silent movies at the Watson hotel at Bombay. Inspired by the silent movies, a quite revolution started, which was helmed by eminent personalities like Hiralal, J.F.Madan and F.B. Thanewala. But it was Dadasaheb Phalke, who made a full length feature film on the life of Raja Harischandra and released it commercially in the year 1913. This was the era of silent movies.

The first sound film in India was Alam Ara directed by Ardeshir Irani in the year 1931. Since then, the Indian film industry has never looked back. Compared to regional film industry, the Hindi film industry is quite big. In fact it has the record of churning more films in a year. Over the years, the style of making movies India has changed a lot. Nowadays a lot of technology is being incorporated to make the story more realistic.

In recent years, major production houses have come up and it also includes big names of Hollywood. They too want to cash in on the success of Indian movies. Indian movies are very much popular among the western audiences in particular due to its opulent sets, high emotions, song and dance sequence etc. The overseas market has been a source of large profit for the producers.

Movies in India not only depict the life of common Indians, but are also a medium through the world can view the growth of India as a nation. With a stable economic growth and a largely young population, Indian movies can certainly go places.
